In the rush of our daily lives, amidst the relentless flow of emails, meetings, and obligations, it’s easy to get caught up in the mechanics of our existence. We often become so unaware of the simple, most fundamental aspect of our lives: breathing. It’s something we do thousands of times a day without a second thought. Yet, when we reflect more deeply, every breath carries a profound spiritual and theological truth.
The Bible paints a powerful picture of our origin in Genesis 2:7: “Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” This verse is more than just a creation story; it’s an intimate revelation of who we truly are. We were created from the earth, which confirms our mortality and our connection to the creation around us, but we were also filled with God’s very own breath. That breath isn’t just air; it’s the breath of life from God.
This leads us to a profound question: What do we do with all the breaths between our first inhale and our last exhale? Our life is a gift, a continuous cycle of inhaling and exhaling that reflects God’s life within us. Think about it. The moment Jesus breathed his last on the cross marked the end of his earthly life but also the beginning of our salvation. His final breath wasn’t a sign of failure but a final act of love and obedience. Every breath we take is an opportunity to recognize God’s presence within us. We often become so busy with life’s demands that we forget the value of this intimate gift. It becomes an unconscious action, a routine, rather than a conscious act of gratitude.
The true purpose of our breathing, and of our life, is beautifully summarized in John 17:3: “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” The goal isn’t success, wealth, or even happiness in the world’s terms, but an intimate and continuous relationship with God. Our breathing can become a metaphor for our faith. Sometimes we are aware of God’s presence, while at other times we get swept away by the storms of life and forget the breath of God within us. Our challenge is to live with a constant awareness of God’s presence and to use our breath to build His kingdom.
There are times in our lives when we work so hard for God, try so hard to do the right things, that we run out of breath—exhausted, burned out, and without energy. It is in those moments that we must remember this is the perfect opportunity for God to breathe His own breath, His Holy Spirit, back into us and renew us. So, I challenge you today: 1. Become aware of your breathing. Take a moment to be still, breathe deeply, and remember who gave you that breath. God is in you; He breathed Himself into you. 2. Make every breath a prayer. Use every inhale as a moment of receiving God’s grace and every exhale as an act of dedication and gratitude 3. Live so fully for God’s kingdom that you run out of breath. Give everything you have in service to God and your fellow man, and trust that He will fill you again and again. Remember, your life is not a mistake. You are part of God’s creation, formed from the dust and brought to life by His breath. This is the wonder of your existence. Breathe into your palm. Do you feel it? It’s God’s breath, His life in you. Go and make a difference.
